Houston, US: Azzedine Ounahi delivered a decisive performance with two goals as Morocco secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Canada in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 on Saturday, sealing their place in the quarter-finals and becoming the first African nation to reach that stage more than once.
The breakthrough arrived early in the second half when Ounahi converted a powerful right-footed strike from outside the box after linking up with Achraf Hakimi at a free-kick, beating the Canadian defence in the 50th minute. Morocco then tightened their grip on the contest as Canada struggled to respond.
Ounahi struck again in the 82nd minute, finishing calmly from close range after a precise assist from Brahim Díaz to double Morocco’s advantage. Soufiane Rahimi added a third deep into stoppage time to complete the emphatic win.
Canada, making only their third World Cup appearance, showed resilience and created late opportunities. Jonathan David tested from a set-piece in the 78th minute, while Tajon Buchanan forced a fine diving save from Yassine Bounou shortly after, but neither effort could break through Morocco’s organised defence.
The match was physical throughout, with eight yellow cards shared evenly between both sides. A first-half flashpoint saw Achraf Hakimi and Richie Laryea both booked following an altercation, highlighting the intensity of the knockout clash.
Morocco were dealt an early setback when midfielder Ismael Saibari was forced off injured in the 22nd minute, but the Atlas Lions maintained control and composure to see out a historic victory.
Morocco now move on to face the winner of the Paraguay vs France quarter-final tie in Boston, while Canada’s memorable World Cup run comes to an end after their first-ever knockout-stage win earlier in the tournament.
