London: Manchester United overturned another early deficit against a promoted side on Sunday, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat trick to inspire a 5-2 victory over Ipswich at Old Trafford.

United had suffered a disappointing start to its Premier League campaign last weekend, losing 2-0 at Hull, another promoted side that had been widely considered a leading candidate for relegation.

Manager Michael Carrick had called for patience after that defeat, but United again found itself trailing on Sunday when Ipswich went ahead in the 29th minute.

Fernandes, who was named the Premier League's player of the year last season, restored parity in the 40th minute with a powerful left-foot strike at the end of a counterattack.

The Portugal international then converted a penalty in the 61st minute to put United 3-1 ahead before completing his hat trick seven minutes later with a composed finish.

An own goal also contributed to United's comeback. Harry Maguire's shot deflected off Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves, with Maguire having handled the ball during the build-up. A handball foul was not given because Maguire did not score directly from the shot.

Bryan Mbeumo added United's fifth, racing onto Fernandes' pass before lifting the ball over the goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty area.

Ipswich scored a late consolation in stoppage time after Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez lost possession close to his own goal.

Palmer continues Chelsea resurgence

Cole Palmer produced another encouraging display as Chelsea edged Brighton 4-3 at Stamford Bridge in an entertaining contest.

Palmer emerged as one of the Premier League's standout players during his first season at Chelsea in 2023-24, scoring 22 league goals. Injuries and a dip in form subsequently disrupted his progress, while he was left out of England's World Cup squad this summer.

With England coach Thomas Tuchel watching from the stands, Palmer raced around 30 metres before curling a shot into the net from the edge of the area to score Chelsea's fourth goal and effectively end Brighton's hopes of completing a comeback.

Romeo Lavia and Pedro Neto gave Chelsea a 2-0 advantage inside the opening 14 minutes before Joao Pedro extended the lead in the 32nd minute for Xabi Alonso's side.

Brighton responded just before halftime when Malick Yalcouyé pulled one back. The visitors moved closer again in the 63rd minute when Pedro inadvertently deflected Pascal Gross' cross into his own goal.

Palmer's strike secured Chelsea's second consecutive Premier League victory. Chelsea had begun its campaign with a 3-2 win over Fulham on Monday, with Palmer also getting on the scoresheet in that match.

Gross scored Brighton's third with the final kick of the game.

Chelsea's victory came with a concern, however, as midfielder Moises Caicedo was forced off after just 14 minutes of his appearance as a second-half substitute.

Emi Martinez made his Chelsea debut in goal just hours after completing his transfer from Aston Villa.

Sunderland recorded its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Fulham, with substitute Wilson Isidor scoring the decisive goal.

Leeds drew 1-1 with Brentford after Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancelled out Kevin Schade's opener.
