Seattle: Youri Tielemans completed one of the most dramatic comebacks of the FIFA World Cup 2026, scoring a 125th-minute penalty as Belgium overturned a two-goal deficit to defeat Senegal 3-2 after extra time and book a place in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.
Belgium looked destined for elimination after Senegal raced into a commanding 2-0 lead through first-half striker Habib Diarra and a second-half finish from Ismaila Sarr in Seattle. However, a remarkable late revival saw Romelu Lukaku and Tielemans score within the final five minutes of normal time to force extra time before Tielemans held his nerve from the spot with virtually the last kick of the contest.
The victory keeps Belgium's World Cup campaign alive and sets up a potential last-16 meeting with the winner of the United States versus Bosnia and Herzegovina clash. For Senegal, the defeat ended an impressive run after they had looked set to reach the knockout-stage victory they had been chasing since their memorable 2002 campaign.
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia stuck with the same starting XI that secured top spot in Group G, leaving Romelu Lukaku on the bench as Charles De Ketelaere led the attack. Senegal boss Pape Thiaw made three changes following his side's emphatic win over Iraq, with Pape Gueye, Pathé Ciss and Iliman Ndiaye returning to the lineup.
Senegal threatened early and nearly took the lead when Ismaila Sarr struck the post after a fortunate deflection created the opening. The breakthrough arrived moments later as Sadio Mane's cross found Sarr, whose header came back off the upright before Diarra reacted quickest to turn the rebound into the net.
Belgium struggled to create clear openings during the first half, although Maxim De Cuyper came close with a curling effort that was brilliantly tipped away by goalkeeper Mory Diaw.
Garcia introduced Lukaku at half-time in search of a response, but Senegal doubled their advantage just six minutes after the restart. Moussa Niakhaté's long ball split the Belgian defence, allowing Sarr to bring it down superbly before firing past Thibaut Courtois to make it 2-0.
With Belgium staring at elimination, Garcia reshuffled his side again and finally found the breakthrough in the 86th minute. Thomas Meunier's delivery from the right was met by Lukaku, who swept home from close range to ignite hopes of an unlikely comeback.
Belgium completed the turnaround in dramatic fashion just three minutes later. Leandro Trossard's cross caused confusion inside the Senegal penalty area, and Tielemans rose highest to head home after Diaw failed to deal with the delivery.
The momentum remained with Belgium in extra time, with substitute Dodi Lukebakio striking the crossbar as both teams searched for a decisive goal.
The winner eventually arrived deep into stoppage time of extra time after VAR advised referee Said Martinez to review a challenge by Lamine Camara on Tielemans inside the area. The Belgian midfielder stepped up himself and calmly converted the resulting penalty in the 125th minute, completing an extraordinary fightback and sealing Belgium's place in the Round of 16.
