Austria took the lead in the 20th minute through Romano Schmid, who finished a well-worked attacking move with a precise right-foot strike from the edge of the area into the top corner. The goal came after sustained pressure that left the Jordan defence stretched.

Jordan responded strongly after the break and levelled the match in the 50th minute. Ali Olwan made a direct run into the box during a counterattack and beat Austria goalkeeper Alexander Schlager with a right-foot finish, sparking celebrations among Jordan fans watching their team’s first World Cup appearance.

Austria thought they had regained the lead earlier when Marko Arnautovic scored following an error by Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila. However, the goal was disallowed after a VAR review ruled a handball by Stefan Posch in the buildup.

The decisive moment came in the 76th minute from a corner kick, when Jordan defender Yazan Al Arab inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, giving Austria a 2–1 advantage. The goal proved crucial in a tightly contested match.

Austria extended their lead deep into stoppage time when Arnautovic converted a penalty to make it 3–1, sealing the result.

The match also saw concern for Austria defender Stefan Posch, who suffered a jaw injury during the game and his condition remains under observation.

Jordan will next face Algeria in their second Group J match, while Austria are set to take on Argentina in their upcoming fixture.
