Despite the man advantage, Newcastle couldn't capitalize, with Villa holding on for a hard-fought point.

Birmingham: Newcastle United were held to a goalless draw by Aston Villa in their opening Premier League match of the 2025/26 season at Villa Park on Saturday, despite the hosts being reduced to ten men in the second half.
Newcastle dominated the opening period, creating several chances early on. Just two minutes into the game, debutant Anthony Elanga came close to scoring, but his shot was expertly saved by Marco Bizot, who was also making his first appearance for Villa. Anthony Gordon, deployed as a central forward rather than his usual wide position, played a key role in carving out space. A cross from Harvey Barnes found Gordon unmarked, but his header flew over the bar.

Barnes remained influential, delivering another cross to Elanga at the far post, whose volley lacked precision and missed the target. Gordon continued to trouble Villa’s defence, forcing Bizot into another save with a deflected attempt.
Villa eventually improved after the halftime break. Within a minute and a half of the restart, Boubacar Kamara connected with a cross from John McGinn, but Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope, selected ahead of new signing Aaron Ramsdale, comfortably held the header. Morgan Rogers soon created an opportunity for Ollie Watkins, whose shot was also well saved by Pope.
The match’s turning point came in the 66th minute when Newcastle launched a quick counter-attack. Elanga threaded a precise through ball to Gordon, who was brought down by Ezri Konsa, earning a straight red card from referee Craig Pawson.
With the numerical advantage, Newcastle pressed hard for a winner. Barnes unleashed a powerful volley that was blocked by Matty Cash, and the visitors maintained relentless pressure in the closing stages. Nevertheless, Villa’s defence stood firm, denying Newcastle a decisive goal.
Despite their dominance and the advantage of an extra player for over 25 minutes, Newcastle had to settle for a point, while Aston Villa fought hard to secure a valuable draw to kick off their Premier League season.
