Jamie Carragher insisted the club should part ways with Amorim immediately, not out of malice, but because it's in the best interest of both the club and the manager.

Following Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford, football pundit Jamie Carragher criticized both the club and manager Rúben Amorim, calling the situation a “total disaster.” Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher stated that Amorim’s tenure has failed on multiple levels and argued that United’s hierarchy is reluctant to sack him because doing so would be an admission of yet another mistake in a long list of poor decisions. With just 34 points from 33 Premier League games and the team languishing in 14th place, Carragher said the situation has reached a breaking point.
Carragher praised Amorim’s previous success at Sporting Lisbon but maintained that his tactical system never suited a club with Manchester United’s traditions. He emphasized that Amorim is overly committed to his system, likening it to asking Jurgen Klopp to abandon pressing or Pep Guardiola to stop playing possession football. Carragher insisted the club should part ways with Amorim immediately, not out of malice, but because it's in the best interest of both the club and the manager. He placed responsibility on the decision-makers — including Omar Berrada, Jason Wilcox, and Jim Ratcliffe — for hiring a coach whose philosophy was always going to clash with United's needs.
Despite United spending nearly £200 million in the summer on attacking talents like Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko, Carragher believes the squad can still be transformed by a more pragmatic manager. He argued that the current players could function effectively in a more traditional system, such as a back four, with Bruno Fernandes playing centrally behind a striker. According to Carragher, a competent manager could lead this team into European contention, but Amorim has failed to do so.
The club has lost its soul!
Wayne Rooney, the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, echoed similar concerns, expressing deep disappointment in both the team’s performances and the club's overall direction. Speaking on his podcast, Rooney admitted he has no faith in Amorim's ability to reverse United’s decline, noting that he now attends games expecting the team to lose. Rooney lamented the lack of fight, character, and desire among the players, and said the club had “lost its soul.”
He also highlighted broader issues within the club culture, revealing that staff were leaving or being dismissed, and warning that the toxic atmosphere could affect the youth academy — where his own children are enrolled. For both Carragher and Rooney, the consensus is clear: Manchester United are in disarray, and change is urgently needed. (With inputs from Agencies)
