Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for his India debut after being left out of the playing XI for the first T20I against Ireland. Shreyas Iyer explains the decision at the toss.

The wait for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's much-anticipated India debut continues. The 15-year-old batting sensation was not included in India's playing XI for the opening T20I against Ireland in Belfast on Friday, ending speculation over whether he would become the country's youngest international cricketer.
India captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed the decision after winning the toss and opting to bowl first, saying the teenager's opportunity would come in due course.
"I think he will get his opportunity when the time comes," Iyer said when asked about Sooryavanshi's absence from the XI.
The decision means Indian fans will have to wait at least one more match to see the Rajasthan Royals youngster make his senior international debut.
India chose to field first after Iyer called correctly at the toss, with the skipper citing unfamiliar conditions and a fresh surface in Belfast.
Why the excitement around Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?
Sooryavanshi travelled with the Indian squad after impressing with his fearless batting and explosive strokeplay, particularly during his breakthrough IPL campaign for Rajasthan Royals. His inclusion in the squad had sparked widespread anticipation that he could become India's youngest international cricketer at just 15 years of age.
However, the team management has opted against rushing the teenager into the playing XI.
Ahead of the series, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had praised the youngster's exceptional talent but stressed that team selection would be based on balance and fairness rather than hype.
Kotak described Sooryavanshi as an "outstanding talent" and highlighted his aggressive approach, adaptability and maturity despite his age. He also noted that players coming through India's Under-19 and emerging pathways are already familiar with the national team's culture, making the transition smoother whenever their opportunity arrives.
At the same time, the batting coach had made it clear that the management did not want to overlook other players who had earned their place through consistent performances.
While Sooryavanshi's debut remains on hold, the teenager continues to be viewed as one of India's brightest young prospects, with the team management indicating that his chance will come when the timing is right.
Meanwhile, Ireland entered the series with several key absentees, including Josh Little, Mark Adair, Paul Stirling and Curtis Campher through injury.
The hosts are also beginning a new chapter under captain Lorcan Tucker as they take on the reigning T20 world champions.
