Guwahati: IPL 2026 witnessed the arrival of a new phenomenon as 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi lit up the Baraspara Cricket Stadium with a breathtaking knock, powering Rajasthan Royals (RR) to a six-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

The cricketing world didn’t even wait for the match to end before erupting on social media.

Sooryavanshi’s fearless strokeplay gave birth to a new buzzword, ‘Vaiball’, coined by Ravichandran Ashwin, capturing the teenager’s audacious, high-impact batting style.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag summed up the excitement, praising the youngster’s fearlessness and hinting at a massive future ahead.

Irfan Pathan, meanwhile, noted how Sooryavanshi appeared to target the biggest bowlers deliberately, a rare trait for someone so young.

Blistering knock dismantles RCB

Chasing a daunting 202, RR got off to a dream start thanks to Sooryavanshi’s explosive 78 off just 26 balls. His innings, laced with boundaries and towering sixes, completely dismantled RCB’s bowling attack in the powerplay.

He took on seasoned pacers with remarkable confidence, turning near-perfect yorkers into scoring opportunities and attacking even the slightest errors in length.

Whether it was Bhuvneshwar Kumar or Josh Hazlewood, no bowler was spared as the teenager dictated terms from the outset.

RR raced to a record 97/1 in the powerplay, their best-ever in IPL history, effectively putting the chase beyond RCB’s control early on. Although Krunal Pandya eventually dismissed Sooryavanshi, the damage had already been done.

At the other end, Dhruv Jurel anchored the innings brilliantly with an unbeaten 81 off 43 balls. His composed knock ensured there were no late hiccups as RR comfortably chased down the target in just 18 overs.

Patidar admits Sooryavanshi made the difference

RCB captain Rajat Patidar acknowledged that despite posting a competitive total of 201/8, his team was outplayed by RR’s aggressive batting,  particularly Sooryavanshi’s game-changing innings.

“The way Vaibhav batted made all the difference,” Patidar admitted, adding that RR’s approach made the pitch look far easier than it actually was.

Earlier, RCB had recovered from an early collapse, thanks to Patidar’s half-century and useful contributions from Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer. However, their bowling attack failed to contain RR’s explosive start.

Even a brief middle-order wobble for RR couldn’t shift momentum, as Jurel steadied the innings with maturity beyond his years.

At just 15, Sooryavanshi has already captured the imagination of fans and experts alike.

If early reactions are any indication, IPL 2026 may well be remembered as the tournament where ‘Vaiball’ was born, and where a teenage prodigy announced himself on the global stage.
