Queensland: Steve Smith’s ongoing verbal tussle with Bangladesh over the Decision Review System (DRS) spilt over into the second Test at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, prompting on-field umpires to step in and issue a direct warning to the Australian batter.

The Incident on Day 1

The confrontation unfolded in the ninth over of Australia's first innings on Day 1 after fast bowler Taskin Ahmed struck Smith on the pad, triggering a loud appeal for leg-before-wicket. Umpire Nitin Menon turned down the shout, but Taskin immediately urged captain Najmul Hossain Shanto to challenge the decision. Spotting the fielding team gathering to deliberate, Smith actively joined the conversation, shouting, “I'm halfway down the wicket to him, it's going miles over,” before gesturing towards the players and telling them to “Go for it”.

Umpiring Intervention and Commentary Reaction

Although Shanto ultimately opted against taking the review, Smith’s antics attracted the immediate attention of the match officials. Both on-field umpires approached Smith to make it clear that review deliberations were strictly for the fielding side, cautioning him against attempting to influence the opposition. Fox Cricket commentator Brendon Julian supported the umpires’ intervention on air, asserting that batters should not be permitted to meddle in an opposing team's decision-making process.

Escalation from the Darwin Test

Saturday's exchange marks the continuation of a running psychological saga between Smith and Bangladesh that ignited during the first Test in Darwin. Smith employed similar tactics during the series opener, famously deriding a turned-down appeal off Ebadot Hossain by shouting, “Knee roll you reckon? It was up here you peanut!” to successfully talk Bangladesh out of reviewing. In Australia's second innings at Darwin, Smith further provoked the visitors following another unsuccessful appeal, telling wicketkeeper Litton Das to “use it” and “waste another one”.
