Sydney: Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is now stable after suffering a spleen laceration during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, sources told IANS.

According to the sources, the Indian team management is maintaining close contact with Iyer and continuously monitoring his recovery.

The injury, initially suspected to be related to the rib cage, was later diagnosed as a spleen laceration, leading to Iyer’s ICU admission at a Sydney hospital. He has since shown steady signs of improvement, and his family is expected to travel to Australia soon to be with him.

A spleen laceration involves a tear or rupture of the spleen, a soft organ located beneath the rib cage on the upper left side of the abdomen. Because the spleen filters blood, such injuries can cause significant internal bleeding and require swift medical attention.

Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated that Iyer had sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while fielding in the third ODI on October 25.

“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” the board had stated.

Iyer sustained the injury while completing a catch to dismiss Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey in the 33rd over of their innings. Carey miscued a short delivery from seam-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana, and Iyer sprinted back from backward point, diving full length to take a tumbling catch near deep third man.

Following the catch, Iyer was seen in discomfort and was immediately taken to the hospital, where tests revealed the severity of the injury.
