India has kick-started a new chapter in T20I cricket, appointing Shreyas Iyer as captain for the upcoming white-ball assignments in Ireland and England while handing a maiden national call-up to teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

The selectors' decision marks a significant shift in India's plans for the next T20 World Cup cycle, with the management looking ahead to major events including the Asian Games and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Shreyas replaces Suryakumar Yadav at the helm despite India's recent T20 World Cup success under the latter's leadership.

The biggest talking point from the squad announcement was the inclusion of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

The youngster forced his way into contention after a remarkable IPL campaign and is now in line to become the youngest player ever to represent the Indian men's team.

If he makes his debut during the Ireland or England series, he will surpass Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record for the youngest India debutant.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the leadership change, saying Shreyas had been extremely close to making India's T20 World Cup squad and remains one of the strongest leadership candidates in the current setup.

“Shreyas was quite close to getting into that T20 World Cup squad. It was a tough call on Suryakumar Yadav, but you need to reassess your plan moving forward. Shreyas is a well-deserving captain. He is a standout candidate with enough experience,” Agarkar said.

Tilak Varma has been appointed vice-captain and is expected to play a key role in India's transition phase.

The selectors have also retained a strong core featuring Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar.

Meanwhile, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been rested from the Ireland and England T20Is but returns to lead the pace attack at the Asian Games. His inclusion provides valuable experience in a squad that also features several emerging players.

Another notable selection is Prince Yadav, who impressed despite Lucknow Super Giants enduring a difficult IPL season.

Agarkar praised the pacer's domestic performances and ability to handle pressure situations, leading to his inclusion for the Ireland and England tour.

The selectors have also made adjustments in other formats. Virat Kohli has been ruled out of the ODI series against Afghanistan with a hamstring injury, while Yashasvi Jaiswal has been named as his replacement.

In red-ball cricket, Dhruv Jurel will captain India in two preparatory matches ahead of the challenging Test tour of Sri Lanka later this year.

With India entering a fresh cycle and an eye firmly on future global tournaments, the appointment of Shreyas and the rise of Vaibhav signal the beginning of a significant rebuilding phase in Indian cricket.
