In what could have been one of the most sensational player trades in IPL history, Rajasthan Royals’ bid to send skipper Sanju Samson to the Delhi Capitals fell apart at the final stages — reportedly over the inclusion of one additional player.

The failed negotiation has not only exposed the razor-thin margins that define IPL trade politics but has also reignited the Chennai Super Kings’ pursuit of Samson, setting the stage for a blockbuster off-season shake-up.

According to reports, Rajasthan had initially approached Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with a swap proposal involving Ravindra Jadeja, hoping to reunite with the India all-rounder who began his IPL journey with the Royals in 2008.

However, with CSK unwilling to part with one of their longest-serving icons, Rajasthan redirected their efforts towards Delhi Capitals, floating an alternative trade idea centered on Samson and Tristan Stubbs.

Sources told The Times of India that both camps were on the verge of finalising the terms, with only the formal exchange of paperwork pending. However, the talks hit a dead end when Rajasthan insisted on adding Sameer Rizvi, Delhi’s promising uncapped batter, to the deal.

Delhi, unwilling to part with Rizvi — who was one of the breakout performers of the 2024 domestic circuit — pulled the plug.

By that point, even senior players in the Delhi camp had reportedly been briefed about the imminent arrival of Samson, indicating just how far the negotiations had progressed.

Insiders described it as a deal that “was 90 percent done” before collapsing over “an unrealistic last-minute demand.”

The fallout from the failed trade has triggered a domino effect across franchises. With Delhi out of the picture, Rajasthan reopened talks with CSK, who have since emerged as the frontrunner to secure Samson’s signature.

According to ESPNCricinfo, discussions between the Royals and the Super Kings now involve a three-player swap — Samson in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran — a trade that would rank among the most high-profile in IPL history.

If finalised, the move could redefine both teams’ core dynamics: CSK gaining a future captaincy contender and RR rebuilding around an all-rounder-heavy core.

However, for now, the Delhi deal stands as a cautionary tale — a reminder that in IPL trading rooms, even one name too many can make millions vanish.
