In a development that has left the cricketing world stunned, Indian stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have mysteriously disappeared from the latest ICC ODI batting rankings released on Wednesday.

Just last week, Rohit was ranked No.2 and Kohli No.4 in the world. But in the August 20 update, neither player features even in the top 100—a sudden absence that has baffled fans and analysts alike.

The disappearance comes despite both legends being very much active in the ODI format. They played key roles during India’s victorious ICC Champions Trophy campaign earlier this year in the UAE. Rohit struck a match-winning knock in the final, while Kohli anchored crucial innings in the group stages, particularly at the spin-heavy Dubai International Stadium.

Until the previous update, Rohit was second only to Shubman Gill in the ODI batting charts, while Kohli sat comfortably at fourth with 736 rating points. Their removal has now pushed Babar Azam up to No.2, with Gill retaining the top spot at 756 points.

The move appears to be either an error or a technical glitch in the ICC’s system, since no retirement or inactivity rule applies to either batter. Social media has erupted in speculation, with hashtags #RohitSharma and #ViratKohli trending on X (formerly Twitter) as fans debate whether the ICC made a mistake or if there’s more to the story.

So far, the ICC has not issued a clarification, further fuelling the chatter. Given their recent form and active status, many expect the rankings to be corrected in the next update.

For now, though, the absence of India’s most prolific ODI duo from the global charts remains a mystery.
