The 49-year-old, who previously guided Mumbai Indians to three IPL titles during his initial tenure from 2017 to 2022, returned as head coach ahead of the 2025 season.

Mumbai: Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down as the head coach of five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians, concluding a two-season second stint at the helm, the franchise announced on Saturday.
The 49-year-old, who previously guided Mumbai Indians to three IPL titles during his initial tenure from 2017 to 2022, returned as head coach ahead of the 2025 season.
"Mahela has made a significant contribution to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us," MI owner Nita Ambani said in an official statement.
"On behalf of the entire MI family, I want to thank Mahela for his immense contribution and unwavering commitment over the years.
"We will always cherish the journey we have shared and the memories we have created together. Mahela will always be a part of our OneFamily, and we wish him every happiness and success in the journey ahead."
Expressing his gratitude to the management, squad, and fans, Jayawardene reflected on his extended association with the franchise.
"Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for over a decade now. The players, coaching team, the incredible support of the OneFamily and above all the fans have made this an experience I will always treasure. Together, we have shared some unforgettable moments, overcome challenges and built something we can all be proud of.
"I want to sincerely thank Mrs. Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their unwavering trust, support and friendship over the years. I leave with immense pride in what we have achieved together and will always carry a special place in my heart for MI. I wish the team every success in the years ahead," said Jaywardene, who led Sri Lanka to the 2007 ODI World Cup final.
During his initial six-year spell as head coach, Jayawardene led Mumbai Indians to silverware in 2017, 2019, and 2020. Between 2022 and 2024, he held the position of Global Head of Performance across the franchise's international teams—MI Emirates in the ILT20, MI New York in Major League Cricket (MLC), and MI Cape Town in SA20.
He succeeded Mark Boucher as head coach prior to the 2025 IPL campaign, where MI finished fourth before being eliminated in Qualifier 2. In the 2026 season, the team endured a difficult run, finishing ninth on the points table.
With his departure, Mumbai Indians face the task of appointing a new head coach ahead of the November 15 IPL retention deadline and the player auction scheduled for mid-December in Goa. (PTI)
