Bengaluru: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ended their nearly three-month silence on August 28, 2025, following the tragic stampede outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives and injured around 50 during the franchise’s IPL victory celebrations on June 4. The crushing crowd incident deeply shocked the cricket fraternity and fans worldwide.

In an emotional letter shared on their official social media platform X, RCB addressed their fans — the “12th Man Army” — acknowledging that their silence was not absence, but grief. They expressed heartfelt condolences and spoke about how the tragedy changed their perspective and the spirit of celebrations.

The team announced the launch of “RCB Cares,” a new initiative to support victims and families affected by the stampede. The franchise pledged financial assistance of ₹10 lakh to each family of the deceased and committed to listening and responding to the needs of their community. The announcement marked the beginning of RCB’s efforts to rebuild trust and support their fanbase.

The tragic event occurred when a massive crowd gathered outside the stadium for an unpermitted felicitation ceremony, despite police denying permission over concerns about crowd management and traffic congestion. Over 250,000 fans packed the surrounding areas, far exceeding safe limits, leading to a surge and subsequent stampede near multiple entrances.

The state government, police authorities, and courts have since investigated the incident, holding RCB, event organisers, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association accountable for proceeding without adequate permissions and preparations. Several officials were suspended, and FIRs were filed. Four individuals, including RCB’s marketing head, were arrested and later released on bail.

Following the tragedy, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium was stripped of hosting competitive matches, with IPL tournaments and international fixtures relocated.
