Hamilton: Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has offered tactical insight on how Team India can neutralise New Zealand’s rampant batter Glenn Phillips in the fifth and final T20I of the series in Hamilton. Speaking during an expert media panel on ESPNcricinfo, Pathan recommended deploying left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav to turn the ball away from the dynamic right-hander off the stumps. Phillips has proved to be a persistent thorn in India’s side throughout the series, highlighted by his explosive 107 off 49 balls in Auckland during the fourth T20I.

Pathan’s tactical advice addresses a notable blind spot in India's bowling deployment, as Phillips’ ability to assault seamers on the back foot and sweep conventional spin has destabilised the visiting bowling attack. By introducing Kuldeep’s drift and wrist-spin turn moving away from Phillips' hit zone, Pathan believes India can stem the flow of boundaries and finally break his dominant run.

Tactical Combinations and Balancing Team Dynamics

The suggested inclusion of Kuldeep presents a selection conundrum for the Indian team management, which has consistently favoured Axar Patel to maintain an extended batting lineup down to number eight. Pathan proposed that India could potentially field both Kuldeep and mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy concurrently by sacrificing a lower-order specialist batter, especially considering India have already clinched the five-match series.

"I would like to see Kuldeep Yadav taking the ball away from Glenn Phillips from the stumps," Pathan remarked during the broadcast discussion. "There will be very interesting battles. Personally, I would want to see both of them. Maybe India will say, we will only have seven batters because it's a good pitch and we can have both the spinners as well in the game. Giving them an opportunity in the last game, when we have won the series, it will be the right thing to do."

Phillips' Dominance and Top-Order Considerations

Phillips’ run-scoring form in the T20I series has drawn praise from cricket pundits, with Pathan describing his series performance as "Man of the Series-worthy." Across the first four matches, Phillips compiled 276 runs at an extraordinary average of 92.00 and a strike rate of 189.04, featuring two half-centuries and a hundred.

Pathan also reflected on potential top-order management, noting the selection dilemma between giving game time to youngster Vaibhav Suryavanshi or maintaining consistency with Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson. However, finding a defensive and attacking resolution to Phillips remains the foremost tactical objective for India heading into the final fixture in Hamilton.
