Captain’s class: Shubman Gill’s 86 sinks KKR as Gujarat Titans secure 3rd straight win
The result leaves the three-time champions KKR at the bottom of the table, struggling with inconsistency, while the Titans continue their strong campaign.
Gujarat: Shubman Gill delivered an elegant 86-run performance on Friday to lead the Gujarat Titans to a commanding five-wicket victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders, extending the latter's winless streak in the 2026 Indian Premier League.
The Titans’ captain anchored the chase with poise and fluency at the Narendra Modi Stadium, striking eight boundaries and four sixes in a 50-ball stay that ensured his side reached the 181-run target with two deliveries to spare.
Pace Attack Stifles Kolkata
The Knight Riders were immediately put on the defensive by a precision new-ball spell from Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj. Siraj set the tone on the very first ball he bowled, dismissing KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane for a golden duck. Rabada further dismantled the top order, removing Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Tim Seifert to leave the visitors reeling at 37 for 3 during the powerplay.
Despite the early wreckage, Cameron Green produced a resilient, lone-handed effort to bolster the Kolkata total. The Australian all-rounder weathered the initial storm to score 79 off 55 deliveries, including seven fours and four sixes. While Green managed to forge key partnerships with the middle order, a late-inning collapse saw KKR restricted to 180 all out.
Rabada finished as the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 29, while Siraj remained highly economical, returning 2 for 23.
Titans Control the Chase
In response, the Gujarat Titans seized early momentum, racing to 71 for 1 in the opening six overs. Gill set an aggressive tempo from the outset, combining with Sai Sudharsan (22) to keep the required run rate well within reach.
Following Sudharsan’s departure, Jos Buttler maintained the pressure on the Kolkata bowling unit, attacking from the start of his 15-ball 25. Although KKR’s spinners, Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine, managed to claim occasional wickets, they were unable to build sustained pressure or stem the flow of runs.
The loss leaves the three-time champion Knight Riders struggling at the bottom of the table, as their batting inconsistencies and lack of bowling discipline continue to plague their 2026 campaign.
