Chennai: India has turned to Sanju Samson and vice-captain Axar Patel to salvage their T20 World Cup campaign, naming the duo to the starting XI for Thursday's high-stakes Super 8 clash against Zimbabwe.

The tactical reshuffle comes after Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza won the toss and elected to field at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. India, the pre-tournament favourites, are in a virtual knockout position following a heavy 76-run defeat to South Africa that left their Net Run Rate in a tailspin.

Samson Replaces Rinku

The inclusion of Samson, a right-handed wicketkeeper-batter, is a strategic move intended to disrupt the left-handed heavy top order that struggled against South African off-spin. Samson replaces finisher Rinku Singh, who recently rejoined the squad in Chennai after travelling home to attend to his ailing father.

  • Tactical Balance: By drafting Samson, India aims to neutralise Zimbabwe’s off-spin options, which have been effective against left-handers throughout the tournament.
  • The Axar Return: Vice-captain Axar Patel also returns to the lineup in place of Washington Sundar. Patel’s omission from the previous match drew widespread criticism, and his dual-threat capability with the ball and bat is seen as essential on the slow Chepauk surface.

A "Final" Atmosphere

India enters the contest at the bottom of Group 1 with a daunting Net Run Rate of -3.800. Captain Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged the pressure but insisted the team remains composed despite the stakes.

"Happy with the decision, were looking to bat first," Yadav said at the toss. "Boys are ready. Mood in the camp is relaxed... Even if you win or lose, you learn something out of it. Just forget what happened in the last game."

India XI: Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah.
