Key contributions came from Abhishek Sharma (55), while a fiery late partnership between Hardik Pandya (50*) and Tilak Varma (44*) provided the fireworks.

Chennai: India shattered its own scoring records Thursday, posting a massive 256-4 against Zimbabwe in a T20 World Cup Super 8 clash that rewrote the history books for the tournament hosts.
The total is the highest ever recorded by India in T20 World Cup history, eclipsing a 19-year-old mark of 218-4 set against England during the inaugural 2007 edition. It also stands as the third-highest team total in the history of the competition, trailing only Sri Lanka’s 260-6 in 2007 and West Indies' 254-6 recorded earlier this month.
Abhishek Sharma led the assault at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, rebounding from a string of low scores to hammer 55 off 30 deliveries. Hardik Pandya provided the late-innings fireworks, reaching his half-century with a six on the final ball to finish unbeaten on 50 from just 23 balls.
The middle-order surge was bolstered by Tilak Varma, who contributed a blistering 44 not out off 16 balls in an 80-run partnership with Pandya that came in just 34 deliveries.
India's aggressive intent was evident from the start. Recalled opener Sanju Samson struck 24 off 15 balls to help power the team to 80-1 in the first six overs, India’s third-highest PowerPlay score in tournament history. Ishan Kishan added 38 off 24, while captain Suryakumar Yadav chipped in with a brisk 33.
The performance solidifies a record-breaking month for the Indian squad, which had already set a new PowerPlay high of 86-1 and a then-third-highest total of 209-9 against Namibia on Feb. 12.
Zimbabwe, facing a must-win scenario to keep its semifinal hopes alive, struggled to contain the barrage. Richard Ngarava finished with 1-62 from his four overs, while debutant Tinotenda Maposa conceded 40 runs in just two overs.
India enters the second innings needing a victory to stay in contention for the knockout stages.
