New Delhi: India’s aggressive wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is expected to miss the two-match Test series against the West Indies, starting in Ahmedabad on October 2, due to a fractured left foot sustained earlier this year. Injury Background and Recovery Progress

Pant, who was the deputy captain to Shubman Gill during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England earlier this year, fractured his left foot on the opening day of the fourth Test at Manchester. Despite the injury, he valiantly batted through the innings but was ruled out for the final Test in the series, with Tamil Nadu’s N Jagadeesan stepping in as his replacement.

Currently, Pant is undergoing strength and conditioning exercises at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and is awaiting further medical advice before resuming full batting and wicketkeeping duties. There is no specific timeline yet for his return to competitive cricket.

Squad Selection and Possible Replacements

India’s selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, will name a 15-player squad for the West Indies Tests, which is two players fewer than the squad fielded for the 3-0 home series loss against New Zealand in October 2024. With Pant out, Dhruv Jurel is the frontrunner to take over wicketkeeping responsibilities; he recently kept wickets for India against England and is currently part of the India A squad playing against Australia A. Narayan Jagadeesan, who swapped keeping duties with Jurel in the India A matches, could be named as the backup wicketkeeper as per the selectors’ plans.

The selectors are also contemplating the inclusion of promising batsmen Nitish Kumar Reddy and Devdutt Padikkal. Padikkal recently scored a century for India A against Australia A in Lucknow, while Reddy, a talented all-rounder who toured Australia and England with India, is recovering from a knee injury sustained during the England series. Both are participating in the ongoing India A-Australia A matches and remain contenders for the main squad.
