Bangladesh's decision to bat first after winning the toss in the Champions Trophy has led to a major setback as they lost half their side for just 35 runs. The team’s top-order, including Shanto, Soumya Sarkar, and Mushfiqur Rahim, were all dismissed for low scores. Mohammed Shami claimed two wickets, while Harshith Rana picked up one.

In a dramatic twist, Axar Patel’s hat-trick opportunity was thwarted by misfortune. Patel had already made a mark in his very first over, dismissing Tanzid Hasan (25), who was caught behind by wicketkeeper KL Rahul, and then following it up by sending Mushfiqur Rahim packing with a similar delivery. However, a potential hat-trick opportunity was lost when a shot by Jaker Ali was dropped by captain Rohit Sharma in the slip. The drop of the easy catch left both the players and fans disappointed. The Indian skipper was later seen apologising to Axar, a video that has now gone viral on social media.

This loss meant that Axar Patel missed out on an extraordinary hat-trick in a Champions Trophy match. Earlier, Shami claimed the wicket of opener Soumya Sarkar in the first over, and in the second over, Harshith Rana sent captain Najmul Hossain back to the pavilion.

India played with three spinners—Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel—and included Harshith Rana as a second pacer, leaving Arshdeep Singh out of the final eleven. KL Rahul took the gloves behind the stumps.

In the match, India lost its 11th consecutive toss in one-day internationals since the 2023 World Cup final. India now joins the Netherlands in having lost 11 consecutive tosses between 2011 and 2013.

The match is taking place at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
