India captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir were spotted in what appeared to be a tense, extended discussion after the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi.

Rohit, who scored 57 in India’s narrow 17-run win, was seen talking animatedly with Gambhir inside the dressing room moments after the match ended. TV cameras briefly captured the two engaged in a serious exchange, though the subject of their conversation remains unknown.

In the footage, Gambhir seemed to be explaining something as Rohit responded with a head shake. A few seconds later, Rohit put forward his own point before the broadcast cut away from the scene.

The interaction has triggered curiosity online, especially at a time when the future of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remains a subject of debate. Ever since both stepped away from Test cricket earlier this year, questions have persisted about whether they will feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Their dynamic with Gambhir, who took over as head coach ahead of the Champions Trophy, has been closely watched by fans and analysts.

Adding to the speculation, reports on the eve of the opening ODI suggested that the BCCI, along with Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, is planning a meeting in Ahmedabad to discuss the long-term roadmap for Rohit and Kohli.

During the first ODI itself, Gambhir was visibly appreciative of both veterans. He applauded Rohit’s half-century and later stood up to give Virat Kohli a standing ovation after the star batter was dismissed for 135.

Gavaskar backs Gambhir

Amid criticism directed at Gambhir for frequent changes in the batting order, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar came to his defence, insisting players must take responsibility.

"He's a coach,” said Gavaskar. “The coach can prepare a team. But it's out there in the middle that the players have to deliver.

"If you're not prepared to give him credit for the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup win, then please tell me why you want to blame him for the team out there on that 22-yard strip not doing well," Gavaskar added.
