While official ratification is pending, the move marks a major milestone for the T20 league.

Chennai: The Big Bash League (BBL), Australia's premier domestic Twenty20 cricket tournament, is preparing to venture outside its traditional borders for a historic international debut.
According to a report by Sportstar, a Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) source confirmed on Monday that the opening match of the league's 16th edition (BBL 2026-27) is scheduled to take place at the iconic M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Venue Scouting and Strategic Partnerships
The highly anticipated season opener will most likely be contested during the second week of December. In preparation for the fixture, a five-member delegation of Cricket Australia (CA) officials travelled to Chennai. The committee attended Monday's Indian Premier League match between the Chennai Super Kings and the Sunrisers Hyderabad while conducting a thorough site inspection to evaluate the stadium’s facilities and explore its operational viability.
While Cricket Australia has yet to officially ratify the venue selection, a CA representative acknowledged the ongoing discussions regarding the expansion.
“We are not able to confirm anything. We are exploring the potential of Chennai in partnership with the Australian Government to drive the India-Australia relationship. Nothing confirmed as yet, and we are working closely with our friends in BCCI.”
High-level administrative talks are already underway to facilitate the cross-border venture. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Mithun Manhas was also present in Chennai to conduct formal meetings with the visiting Australian cricket executives.
Big Bash League and the Defending Champions
Established by Cricket Australia in 2011, the Big Bash League has grown into one of the world's most popular franchise-based T20 leagues, typically featuring eight city-based Australian franchises.
The upcoming 2026-27 tournament follows a historic preceding season. In the BBL 15 final played on January 25, 2026, the Perth Scorchers secured their status as the most successful franchise in tournament history by capturing their sixth title. Led by captain Ashton Turner, the Scorchers executed a composed run chase to defeat the Sydney Sixers by six wickets at Optus Stadium in Perth, entering the upcoming season as the reigning champions.
