The Indian cricket team made two changes to their playing XI for the third Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) at The Gabba. Following a crushing 10-wicket defeat in Adelaide, the Indian management opted to drop Ravichandran Ashwin and Harshit Rana, bringing in Ravindra Jadeja and Akash Deep as their replacements.

The inclusion of Ravindra Jadeja as the third spinner in as many matches raised eyebrows. Washington Sundar had played in the series opener in Perth, while Ravichandran Ashwin featured in the second Test at Adelaide. Former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik expressed his disapproval of the constant shuffling in the spin department, calling the decision "defensive."

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik critiqued the move, suggesting that the management's choice prioritizes batting depth over bowling effectiveness.

"I have to say Gautam (Gambhir) and Rohit (Sharma) have gone towards an option that provides more batting. It doesn't sit well with me," Karthik said.

Karthik emphasized the importance of taking 20 wickets to win Test matches, a principle he attributed to the success of the Virat Kohli-Ravi Shastri era.

"You always have to give credit to Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli. They always aimed for 20 wickets and preferred a 6:5 combination -- six batters and five bowlers," he explained.

He pointed out that while Jadeja's inclusion strengthens the batting lineup, it potentially weakens the bowling unit.

"With Jadeja in the XI, the batting unit looks more balanced, but the magic of the bowling unit seems to have been lost," Karthik said.

Defensive Strategy or Pragmatic Choice?

While acknowledging India's strong lineup, Karthik questioned whether Washington Sundar or Ravichandran Ashwin had underperformed enough to justify their exclusion.

"What has Washington and Ashwin done with the ball that a Jadeja can’t? That would be the question. I feel it’s slightly defensive, but I understand their reasoning," Karthik added.

A New Find in Nitish Kumar Reddy

Karthik also praised Nitish Kumar Reddy as a standout performer in the series, highlighting his contributions with both bat and ball.

"Nitish Reddy has probably been the find of the series so far. He provides depth in batting while also chipping in with crucial overs and wickets," he said.
