In an engaging and interactive session titled "What a Wonderful World" at the sixth edition of the Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters, IAS officer Divya S Iyer shared invaluable life lessons with children, emphasizing the importance of enjoyment and positivity in achieving success. As the managing director of Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, Divya's multifaceted career and unique journey served as a backdrop for her inspiring talk.
She began the session by sharing a simple yet profound tip for leading a successful life which was to do anything with enjoyment. She stressed that forceful activities, whether imposed by society or loved ones, often lead to dissatisfaction. Quoting Anne Frank, she said, "It's very hard when you have to, very easy when you want to," urging children to pursue their passions with joy and curiosity. Reflecting on her own journey, she revealed how she chose to pursue the UPSC exams after completing her MBBS, a decision that surprised many, but was driven by her love for learning.
From a young age, Divya found inspiration in her teachers, even admiring their handwriting as a fourth grader. She highlighted the importance of being mindful of the influences around us, as they shape our thoughts and actions. Recounting her childhood, she shared how she would play the role of a teacher with an imaginary class in her room, using a blackboard to teach and learn. Though others found it amusing, she remained unfazed, as it was her way of enjoying the learning process.
She also addressed the purpose of studying, emphasizing that whether it’s for knowledge, communication, or friendship, the key is to find joy in it. She reassured children about exams, encouraging them to view tests as opportunities to showcase their knowledge, much like performing on stage. "Studying is not a burden, exams are not fear," she said, urging kids to approach academics with confidence and pride.

The session also touched on the influence of media and the internet on children. Divya cautioned that while social media and technology are powerful tools, they must be used wisely. She advocated for guided access to the internet, allowing children to explore and learn in a safe and constructive manner.
In a heartwarming anecdote, Divya shared how her child’s perspective on her natural, undyed hair became a life lesson. Her son, who cares for a doll named Pranitha, noticed that its blonde hair had turned silver over time. He found it beautiful and cute, likening it to his mother’s hair. This simple yet profound observation reminded Divya to embrace her individuality and reject all societal pressures. She concluded by urging everyone to see the world through the eyes of children free of biases, full of tenderness, and brimming with positivity.
The session ended with an interactive discussion, leaving the young audience inspired and reflective. Divya S Iyer’s message was clear that when we approach life with enjoyment and curiosity, the world truly becomes a wonderful place.
