Thrissur: Suresh Gopi is currently leading the race in Thrissur by a significant margin of over 73,150 votes, making the constituency a focal point for the BJP in Kerala. His closest contender is LDF's V S Sunilkumar, followed by UDF's K Muraleedharan in third place. Suresh Gopi has bagged 4,01,038 votes whereas Sunilkumar and Muraleedharan have bagged 3,27,888 votes and 3,19,839 votes, respectively as of 2 pm.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's repeated visits to the constituency have bolstered support for Suresh Gopi, who had previously contested from Thrissur in 2019 and secured third position. The BJP witnessed its most successful outing in Thrissur that year, with the candidacy of Suresh Gopi. He garnered a remarkable 2,93,822 votes, constituting 28.19% of the total, marking a substantial 17% increase from the previous election.

With Suresh Gopi's massive lead, BJP is most likely to open its account in Kerala for the first time in history. K Muraleedharan's unexpected entry into the fray had built high hopes in the minds of UDF supporters. However, as per the current numbers, it looks like Muraleedharan might reach only the third as V S Sunil Kumar is trailing behind in the second position.

The constituency also had high hopes for three-time MLA V S Sunil Kumar as the parliamentary seat in Thrissur is one among LDF's strongholds.

The voter turnout in Thrissur this year was 72.2 percent, much lesser than 77.92 percent recorded in the year 2019. The 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Thrissur, Kerala, was a keenly contested affair, reflecting the broader dynamics of Indian politics.

The main contenders in the 2019 LS polls were T N Prathapan of the INC, Rajaji Mathew Thomas of the CPI, and Suresh Gopi. T N Prathapan emerged victorious, securing a significant lead over his rivals. His win was seen as a reaffirmation of the Congress's influence in Kerala, a State traditionally resistant to the BJP's advances. Prathapan clinched victory in 2019 with 39.8 percent votes.
