Berlin: Spain clinched their record fourth European Championship title with a 2-1 victory over England, thanks to a decisive goal from substitute Mikel Oyarzabal in the 86th minute. Despite Spain's talented young players leading the charge throughout the tournament, it was Oyarzabal, known for his perseverance through adversity, who secured the championship-winning goal.
Reflecting on his crucial strike, Oyarzabal humbly remarked, "I don’t know if it was karma, fate, or who knows what, but something put me in that position to score that goal." The 27-year-old Real Sociedad player has been a consistent presence for Spain under both coach Luis de la Fuente and his predecessor, Luis Enrique. Valued for his speed, work ethic, and composure as a penalty taker, Oyarzabal's journey to the championship was marked by challenges, including a significant left knee injury that sidelined him just as he seemed set for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
"After my injury, I am so fortunate to feel this immense joy after having gone through what I went through," Oyarzabal expressed, reflecting on his emotional journey. "I am just incredibly happy and proud. It fell to me to score the winner, but it could have been any of my teammates."
The Spanish squad, comprising a blend of players from various clubs beyond the usual Barcelona and Real Madrid dominance, showcased diversity and depth. Emerging talents like Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams added youthful vigour to a team that also featured experienced figures like Oyarzabal and Mikel Merino, whose late goal against Germany in the quarterfinals was crucial.
In the final against England, coach Luis de la Fuente once again demonstrated his tactical acumen by sending on Oyarzabal in the 68th minute to replace Álvaro Morata. Initially tasked with helping to defend Spain's lead after Williams' goal, Oyarzabal found himself thrust into an attacking role when Cole Palmer equalised for England. It was Oyarzabal's astute positioning and Marc Cucurella's precise pass that set him up to score the championship-clinching goal.
"I did my job and was just lucky enough to score the goal for the victory," Oyarzabal recounted modestly. "After having gone through such a hard time, just being here among the 26 players on the squad is enough, but if you then get the chance to help out, well, you can’t beat that."
For Oyarzabal, the goal against England marked his 12th in 37 appearances for Spain since his debut in 2016 under Vicente del Bosque. It was his sole goal at Euro 2024, where Spain emerged victorious in all seven matches they played, underscoring their dominance in the tournament. This triumph adds to Oyarzabal's accolades, including his winning goal for Real Sociedad in the 2020 Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao.
Coach Luis de la Fuente praised Oyarzabal's versatility and reliability, noting, "Mikel is always a sure bet. We have been together for nine years now, and Mikel never lets you down. He can play on either flank and as a central striker, like he did today. Today he scored, but he always provides us something."
The victory in the European Championship final not only solidified Spain's place in soccer history but also highlighted the contributions of players like Mikel Oyarzabal, whose resilience and dedication were crucial in securing the title. As Spain celebrates their record fourth European Championship triumph, Oyarzabal's goal stands as a testament to his determination and ability to rise to the occasion when it matters most.
