Düsseldorf, Germany: Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during France's 1-0 victory over Austria at Euro 2024 here.

The injury occurred when Mbappe collided forcefully with Austrian defender Kevin Danso while contesting a ball in the air. The collision left Mbappe bleeding from his nose, and he had to leave the pitch in the 90th minute for medical attention.

France coach Didier Deschamps expressed concern about Mbappe's condition after the match, describing the injury as significant and stating, "His nose is a mess, that's for sure. That is the black mark of the evening for us."

The incident initially went unnoticed by the officials, with play continuing until Austria's goalkeeper signalled to the referee that Mbappe needed medical assistance. After receiving treatment from the French medical team, Mbappe returned to the pitch briefly but was cautioned for re-entering play without permission before being substituted by Olivier Giroud.

Deschamps could not provide specifics on the extent of Mbappe's injury but acknowledged the uncertainty regarding his availability for the next match against the Netherlands in Leipzig.

While disappointed by Mbappe's injury, Deschamps emphasized that France would continue to compete with or without their star player: "If we find out that he won't be there, we will fight on without him. Kylian is Kylian, and any team is stronger with him in it."

Despite the injury setback, Deschamps was pleased with the team's performance and the positive start to their Euro 2024 campaign: "It is good to start with a victory against such opponents. We showed we were up for the fight as well."

France aims to secure their first European Championship title since 2000, navigating through challenges with both talent and resilience, regardless of Mbappe's availability.
