New Delhi: Indian wrestling has enjoyed a consistent streak of success at the Olympics since the 2008 Beijing Games, establishing itself as a cornerstone of Olympic sports in the country. This achievement spans four consecutive editions, showcasing India's prowess not only at the senior level but also among juniors and in U23 competitions.
The watershed moment came with Sushil Kumar's bronze in 2008, followed by a silver in London 2012, and Yogeshwar Dutt's bronze in the same Games. Sakshi Malik continued the trend with a bronze in Rio 2016, and most recently, Ravi Dahiya and Bajrang Punia clinched medals in the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Despite these achievements, the trajectory of Indian wrestling faced significant challenges due to prolonged administrative issues within the Wrestling Federation of India. The disruptions led to halted national camps and domestic competitions, casting doubt on the sport's future until the international body, UWW, intervened to reinstate normalcy.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Paris Olympics, India has qualified only one male and five female wrestlers. This includes notable contenders like Aman Sehrawat in men's freestyle 50kg, who has shown promise but needs to enhance his tactical approach against formidable opponents like Rei Higuchi and Gulomjon Abdullaev.
Among the women, Vinesh Phogat stands out in the 50kg category with her robust defensive skills and attacking prowess. However, the challenge of maintaining weight and physical demands remains a concern for the experienced wrestler approaching 30.
Antim Panghal, securing her spot in women's 53kg, brings agility and resilience, yet faces the hurdle of competitive rustiness due to a recent back injury. Anshu Malik, in women's 57kg, balances aggression with tactical awareness, though fitness issues linger with a suspected shoulder injury.
Nisha Dahiya's journey to the Olympics in women's 68kg reflects resilience despite setbacks, while Reetika Hooda, competing in women's 76kg, poses a threat with her explosive strength, albeit struggling with consistency in maintaining leads during bouts.
As these athletes prepare to represent India on the grand stage in Paris, their strengths and weaknesses underscore the challenges and aspirations within the sport, aiming to add to India's impressive Olympic wrestling legacy. PTI
