New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence in India's Olympic-bound contingent, anticipating that they would bring honour to the nation and fulfil the aspirations of 1.4 billion people. Approximately 120 athletes will represent India in Paris, aiming to surpass the Tokyo Games' tally of seven medals, including Neeraj Chopra's historic gold in javelin throw.
After meeting with a diverse contingent that included shooters, archers, track and field athletes, and support staff, Modi took to 'X' to share his optimism. He affirmed, "Interacted with our contingent heading to Paris for the Olympics. I am confident our athletes will give their best and make India proud. Their life journeys and success give hope to 140 crore Indians."
Accompanied by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Sports Raksha Khadse, and Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha, Modi shared moments with athletes and key figures like badminton coach Pullela Gopichand and shooting sport high-performance director Pierre Beauchamp, among others.
In a virtual interaction, Modi spoke with Neeraj Chopra, gearing up to defend his title in Paris, along with boxer Nikhat Zareen and two-time Olympic medalist shuttler PV Sindhu. Reflecting on their achievements and challenges, Modi expressed admiration for their dedication.
Earlier on Thursday, Modi welcomed the T20 World Cup-winning team led by Rohit Sharma, who triumphed over South Africa. The team, stranded in Bridgetown, Barbados due to a category 4 hurricane, arrived in Delhi to a warm reception.
Modi shared, "Had a memorable conversation with the members of the T20 World Cup-winning team. Discussed their journey at the ICC event in the USA and the Caribbean." This gesture underscored Modi's support for India's sporting achievements on the global stage, affirming his commitment to celebrating and encouraging excellence in sports. PTI
