New Delhi: World number one and Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Paris Olympics 2024 due to tonsillitis, as confirmed by the ATP's official website.
Expressing deep disappointment, Sinner shared his feelings on missing out on one of his main goals for the season. "I am extremely sad and disappointed. Competing at the Olympic Games was one of my main goals for this season. I was really looking forward to being back at Roland Garros and playing for my country in this prestigious event. However, after seeing my doctors on Tuesday and waiting an extra day to give myself some more time to see if my condition would improve, things unfortunately got worse," Sinner stated.
Symptoms of the illness began for Sinner on Monday following a week of practice in Monaco. After consultation with his medical team, it was strongly recommended that he withdraw from the Olympics.
Despite the setback, Sinner expressed optimism about future Olympic participation and conveyed his best wishes to the Italian team. "As I said this is upsetting for me and I hope to be able to play in the Olympics in the future. I was looking forward to competing with my teammates and the rest of the Italian team, but for now, that will have to wait," he remarked. "As advised by my medical team, I will now take some time to rest and recover to full health. I'd like to wish the whole team Italia the best for this important event and hope to be back stronger in the future."
In 2024, Sinner boasts an impressive win-loss record of 42 wins and four losses, as per the ATP Win/Loss index. His performance in Grand Slam events this year has been remarkable, clinching the Australian Open title in January by defeating Daniil Medvedev, reaching the semifinals of the French Open, and advancing to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.
Additionally, Sinner secured championship titles at prestigious events such as the Miami Open, Rotterdam Open, and Halle Open, including an ATP Masters 1000 title at the Miami Open.
The tennis events at the Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 27 to August 4, overlapping with the dates of the Paris 2024 Games. ANI
