The head of Argentina's soccer federation has strongly criticized the chaotic conclusion to their Olympic soccer match against Morocco on Wednesday, labeling it as nonsensical and scandalous. Argentina's coach echoed these sentiments, condemning the incident as a disgraceful episode at the Olympic Games.
The opening match of the men's soccer tournament witnessed a nearly two-hour suspension during added time when Moroccan fans stormed the field and hurled bottles in protest against a late goal by Argentina. The goal was subsequently overturned following a review by the video assistant referee (VAR), resulting in Argentina's 2-1 defeat.
"What transpired on the field was scandalous. This isn’t some local tournament; these are the Olympic Games," expressed Argentina coach Javier Mascherano.
Officials from Paris organizers stated they were actively investigating the incident to comprehend its causes and determine appropriate actions. The match, held at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne, prompted Argentina's soccer federation to lodge a formal protest with FIFA, pledging to ensure the safety of their players.
"Waiting almost two hours in the dressing room, facing intrusions by Moroccan fans onto the pitch, the violence directed towards the Argentina delegation, and our players having to warm up again and continue a match that should have been halted by the main referee—all of this defies logic and contravenes competition regulations," emphasized Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentina Football Association.
Moroccan supporters rushed onto the field in protest against Cristian Medina's goal in the 16th minute of added time, which had seemingly equalized the score to 2-2. Amid chaotic scenes, bottles were thrown from the stands, and security personnel intervened to subdue pitch invaders. Images captured Argentina players recoiling as what appeared to be a flare landed on the field.
"I condemn the behavior of certain supporters during the match, which tarnished the reputation of our loyal fans. Such conduct has no place in football," stated Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi.
Amidst the confusion, initial reports suggested the match had ended with a 2-2 draw, with players heading to the locker rooms and fans being instructed to leave the stadium. However, it later emerged that the game was suspended with minutes remaining due to security concerns and that Medina's goal was under review.
Players returned to the field after approximately two hours, with the stadium empty, to warm up again. Referee Glenn Nyberg confirmed he was reviewing Medina's goal using the touchline monitor and subsequently ruled it out for offside.
Morocco managed to preserve their lead and clinch the victory in the remaining minutes.
"The match was halted due to security reasons. There was no discussion with us regarding a review of the play at any point," remarked Mascherano.
"Undoubtedly, it's bewildering, but we must move forward. It’s in the past now. Our focus must shift to the remaining matches. We'll channel our frustration and use it positively in the upcoming games."
Argentina, a two-time gold medalist and a favorite going into the tournament, aimed to add to their recent triumphs, having won the World Cup in 2022 and consecutive Copa Americas. Agencies
