Kyiv: Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday signalled that a meeting with US President Donald Trump was expected soon, emphasising that key decisions in the Russia-Ukraine conflict could be made before the New Year.

Zelenskyy stressed that sensitive issues, including potential territorial compromises, must be discussed directly between heads of state, reflecting Kyiv’s insistence on face-to-face diplomacy.

Following discussions between Ukrainian and US negotiators, Zelenskyy confirmed on X that a high-level meeting with Trump would occur shortly, noting that “a lot can be decided before the New Year.” The talks included Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, focusing on diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the ongoing war.

Documents forming part of a broader framework to end the conflict and support Ukraine’s reconstruction were reported as “nearly ready” or “fully prepared” by Zelenskyy. Earlier this week, he presented a 20-point draft peace plan, which outlines security guarantees to prevent future Russian aggression, though no agreement on territorial issues has yet been reached.

Additional matters, such as the control of the occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, remain unresolved and subject to further discussion as diplomatic efforts continue.

Zelenskyy’s statement comes amid heightened diplomatic activity between Kyiv and Washington, reflecting the urgency of resolving the war before the end of the year. While the 20-point draft peace plan includes measures for security guarantees and reconstruction support, Moscow continues to insist on territorial concessions from Ukraine.

Zelenskyy’s insistence on direct engagement with Trump highlights Kyiv’s strategy to ensure sensitive matters are handled at the highest level, preventing misunderstandings or unilateral decisions. The planned meeting is expected to clarify key points, advance ongoing negotiations, and determine the next steps for both peace and reconstruction efforts. Meanwhile, unresolved issues such as control over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant remain critical to the overall settlement, underscoring the complexity of the diplomatic negotiations.
