Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House as a “good meeting” as the two leaders discussed military support for Kyiv and efforts to revive peace talks with Russia.

The closed-door talks lasted for more than an hour and focused on Ukraine’s defence needs, including access to Patriot air defence systems and future cooperation between Washington and Kyiv.

Zelensky said on social media that the discussions included Trump’s earlier offer to allow Ukraine to produce Patriot air defence missiles through licensing arrangements.

Ukraine has been pushing for additional air defence systems as Russia continues missile and drone attacks. Ukrainian officials said strengthening anti-ballistic missile capabilities remains a top priority.

A Ukrainian official said Kyiv wanted Washington’s support for a package involving Patriot missiles and wider strategic cooperation.

The United Nations has reported a rise in civilian casualties in Ukraine amid intensified Russian attacks using long-range weapons.

The meeting reflected a change in relations between Trump and Zelensky compared with their tense Oval Office meeting in 2025. Since then, both leaders have held further discussions, with Trump offering support measures including the possibility of Ukraine producing Patriot missiles.

The US has shifted its approach to military assistance by allowing European countries to purchase weapons for Ukraine, while continuing to provide intelligence support and access to satellite communication systems.

Diplomatic efforts and sanctions

Zelensky also discussed ways to restart diplomatic efforts to end the war. Previous peace initiatives have faced difficulties, especially over territorial issues claimed by Russia.

After meeting Trump, Zelensky was expected to address US senators regarding a bipartisan Russia sanctions bill. Supporters of the legislation believe it could increase pressure on Moscow.

However, some lawmakers have raised concerns over provisions that could expand presidential powers related to tariffs on countries purchasing Russian energy.

The meeting took place as fighting continued between Russian and Ukrainian forces. Ukraine recently increased drone strikes targeting Russian energy facilities, while Russia continued attacks on Ukrainian cities, ports and agricultural shipping routes.

The Kremlin has warned that expanded Ukrainian strikes could prolong the conflict, while Kyiv continues to seek stronger international support.
