A shocking mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan on Monday has left at least four people dead, including a New York police officer, and raised urgent questions about the identity and possible motive of the gunman, Shane Tamura.

The Midtown shooting: What happened?

The deadly incident took place just before 6:30 p.m. inside a high-rise building at 345 Park Avenue, which houses the headquarters of the NFL, Blackstone, and KPMG. Witnesses reported chaos as gunfire broke out across multiple floors.

Authorities later confirmed that the gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, was found dead on the 33rd floor from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, after killing three civilians and one NYPD officer.

Who was Shane Tamura?

Tamura is reportedly a Las Vegas native and a former high school football standout. He graduated in 2016 from Granada Hills Charter High School in California, where he was known as a star running back.

While many details remain unconfirmed, reports suggest that Tamura may have struggled to enter professional football, with some speculation that his frustration at not making it to the NFL could be tied to his actions. Notably, the building he attacked is home to the NFL’s headquarters.

He was also reportedly in possession of a Nevada concealed carry permit, a photo of which has circulated online, though police have not officially verified that document.

Was football rejection the motive?

Investigators have yet to establish a clear motive, but several sources point to Tamura’s failed attempts to join the NFL as a potential factor. His decision to target a location closely associated with the league has led to theories that the shooting may have been symbolic or revenge-driven.

At this time, no formal statement has been made by the NYPD regarding a motive, and the investigation is still ongoing.
