Twenty-three years after the brutal kidnapping and murder of American-Jewish journalist Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, India's Operation Sindoor eliminated Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist Abdul Rauf Azhar who was indirectly linked to the crime, along with 100 other terrorists. While the operation has been hailed by some as a long-awaited step towards justice, the pain and frustration remain palpable for Daniel Pearl's father, Judea Pearl, particularly in light of Pakistan's reaction.
Daniel Pearl, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, was abducted in Karachi, Pakistan, on January 23, 2002, while investigating Islamic extremism. He was subsequently murdered by terrorists. His final words, a proud declaration of his Jewish heritage, resonated globally and underscored the barbarity of his execution.
Abdul Rauf Azhar, the operational head of the terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), was a notorious figure in international jihadist networks and the alleged mastermind behind the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC-814. While JeM was not directly involved in Pearl's abduction, Azhar's role in orchestrating the IC-814 hijack indirectly facilitated the tragedy. The hijacking led to the release of Omar Saeed Sheikh, the Al-Qaeda operative who subsequently lured Daniel Pearl into captivity and orchestrated his murder.
Following the announcement of Azhar's elimination in Operation Sindoor, which targeted terrorist infrastructure inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the killing of 26 tourists in Pahalgam, reactions have been varied. Asra Nomani, a former colleague of Pearl, expressed a sense of overdue justice on social media.
However, for Judea Pearl, the news of Azhar's death has been met with a renewed wave of anguish, compounded by what he perceives as a disturbing reaction from Pakistani authorities. Reports and images of Pakistan Army officials mourning the killed terrorists in the aftermath of Indian airstrikes have deeply upset him.
In a poignant and pointed post on X, Judea Pearl directly addressed these displays of grief, asking: "I wish these dignitaries could tell us: 'What exactly are you mourning? What role models you wish your children to revere? What have you learned from this man?'"
This powerful statement underscores Judea’s profound disappointment and questions the values seemingly being upheld by those mourning individuals responsible for acts of terror. His words highlight the enduring pain caused by his son's murder and his dismay at any form of reverence for those who perpetrate such violence.
Days prior to this, Judea had also taken to X to clarify the connection between Azhar and his son's tragic fate. He stated: "I want to clarify: Azhar was a Pakistani extremist and leader of the terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed. While his group was not directly involved in the plot to abduct Danny, it was indirectly responsible. Azhar orchestrated the hijacking that led to the release of Omar Sheikh—the man who lured Danny into captivity."
While the elimination of a figure like Abdul Rauf Azhar is a notable achievement, Judea Pearl's reaction serves as a stark reminder that for the victims and their families, the wounds of terrorism run deep, and the pursuit of justice extends beyond the battlefield to encompass the condemnation of those who enable and mourn the perpetrators of such heinous crimes.
