Kash Patel, US President Donald Trump’s nominee for FBI Director, recently captured the hearts of many when a video of him touching his parents' feet to seek their blessings before his Senate confirmation hearing went viral. Patel, an Indian-American lawyer and former federal prosecutor, demonstrated his strong connection to his Indian roots, despite living in the United States.
The 44-year-old, born to Gujarati parents, was seen greeting his family with a warm "Jai Shri Krishna" (Victory to Krishna) before introducing them to the Senate Judiciary Committee. As he entered the room, Patel bowed to touch his parents' feet, a deeply rooted tradition in Indian culture that many on social media, particularly those of Indian heritage, shared and admired.

Patel’s touching gesture reflected his commitment to maintaining his cultural values, even as he works in the high-profile world of American politics and law enforcement. His parents, Pramod and Anjana Patel, traveled from India to be with him for the confirmation hearing. Patel expressed his gratitude, saying, “I wouldn’t be here today without their guidance, their unwavering support, and their relentless love.”
Personal story of triumph
In his opening remarks, Patel shared the story of his father, who fled Uganda during Idi Amin's genocidal dictatorship, which led to the death of around 300,000 people. Patel highlighted the ethnic violence his father endured, saying, "They were killed based on their ethnicity, just because they happened to look like me."
Patel's family story reflects resilience, with his mother hailing from Tanzania and the couple marrying in India before immigrating to New York. “We were raised in a household of my father’s seven siblings, their spouses, and at least half a dozen children," Patel recalled, emphasising how his upbringing blended both Indian and American cultures.
Historic nomination
If confirmed as FBI Director, Patel would become the first Hindu and Indian-American to hold this prestigious role. His career has seen him rise from being a congressional aide to a prominent figure in the Trump administration, with notable positions on the National Security Council and as chief of staff to the acting defence secretary.
Patel’s tenure would likely focus on declassifying government secrets and addressing past investigations related to President Trump, with a commitment to ensuring transparency and justice. In his Senate confirmation hearing, Patel expressed that he would carry not only his parents' dreams but also the hopes of millions of Americans who believe in "justice, fairness and the rule of law."
Patel’s vision for FBI
Patel’s vision for the FBI includes revoking security clearances for individuals involved in past investigations of President Trump and ensuring that American law enforcement operates with transparency. His stance on declassifying government secrets has generated both support and criticism, but his determination to uphold justice remains at the forefront of his priorities.
