The shooting occurred shortly after 7.50 pm local time near the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West, outside the stadium where the match between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University had taken place.

Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said most spectators and families had already left the stadium premises when gunfire erupted nearby, where vendors had set up stalls along Graymont Avenue.

He said he was “very grateful that more people weren’t injured.”

The circumstances leading to the shooting remained unclear. One of the injured was in critical condition, while seven others were reported to be stable as of early Sunday.

Police spokesperson De’Rell Freeman said one person had been detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning. Officers also recovered and secured “multiple weapons” at the scene.

Authorities suspended all remaining Magic City Classic tailgating activities and asked the public to stay away from the stadium premises. No police officers or first responders were injured in the incident.
