Washington: The Pentagon on Saturday has dubbed the US combat operations over Iran as "Operation Epic Fury."

The Defense Department announced the name in a social media post that included an American flag emoji, but has otherwise provided no details so far on the strikes.

President Donald Trump said US forces were targeting Tehran's naval and missile forces, and urged Iranians to overthrow their government.

The Trump administration similarly formalised last year's strikes on Iran's nuclear sites as "Operation Midnight Hammer" and his strike to seize Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro earlier this year as "Operation Absolute Resolve."

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the launch of what he termed “Operation Lion’s Roar”. He thanked US President Donald Trump for his support, describing his leadership as “historic.”

Netanyahu accused Iran’s leadership, under Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, of decades of hostility towards Israel and the United States, and warned that the regime must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.
