Washington:The United States is imposing sanctions on three Russian government officials over the death in custody of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the Treasury Department said Friday.

The Treasury Department said that three officials would be designated by the State Department, which was expected to reveal details later in the day.

Meanwhile, US targeted the operator of Russia's Mir payment system and the country's drone procurement network in a raft of sanctions unveiled Friday, ahead of the two-year anniversary of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

"To deny Russia the resources necessary to support its brutal war against Ukraine, Treasury is designating targets including a major cog in Russia's financial infrastructure," said the Treasury Department, which also took aim at over two dozen sanctions evaders in countries beyond Russia. AFP
