The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in United States has deactivated more than 200,000 credit cards across multiple federal agencies following an audit that found they were either unused or unnecessary, Fox News reported. The move is part of an ongoing effort by the Elon Musk-led agency to eliminate waste, fraud, and corruption in the federal government.
DOGE stated that the review covered 4.6 million active government credit cards, which were used for 90 million transactions amounting to $40 billion in the 2024 fiscal year.
Largest cuts in Interior and Health Departments
According to the report, the U.S. Department of the Interior saw the highest number of cancellations, losing nearly 60,000 credit cards, while the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) had over 46,000 cards revoked. The State Department was the only agency among the 16 reviewed that did not see any cancellations.
Focus on reducing government debt
The report states that Musk, who aims to identify $1 trillion in government savings, warned that the U.S. national debt of $36.5 trillion is unsustainable. He called DOGE's work "central" to economic reforms.
Fraudulent loans to minors identified
Additionally, the report reveals that DOGE found nearly 5,600 loans worth $312 million were issued to children under 11 by the Small Business Administration (SBA) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of these loans remains unclear.
