Dubai: Malayalees from various regions across the UAE rallied together round the clock on Tuesday night amidst heavy rainfall, which inundated the city, to rescue people and retrieve submerged vehicles.
In all seven emirates of the UAE, special WhatsApp groups have been created and new associations have been formed to provide assistance to the needy. Most of the Malayalees came forward voluntarily to help. The groups operate under various names, such as Free Food, Rain Support, Dubai Live Information, and Malayalee Friends. Assistance and help are provided to people who request their needs in their respective WhatsApp groups.
Various residential buildings are still surrounded by water. Neighboring shops are also submerged in water, making it difficult for residents to get essential commodities. Malayalee volunteers concentrate more on such areas.
In localities with high water levels where vehicles cannot be used, relief volunteers offer help by swimming to these areas. The volunteers who participate in the relief work in Sharjah belong to organisations affiliated with the Sharjah Indian Association.
In addition, in each emirate, Malayalees from the Red Crescent volunteer to help. Many essential goods, including vegetables from Dubai and Sharjah, are transported to Kalba.
It has become difficult for people to get essential goods as many roads have been damaged by rain. Although there's currently no food crisis in the northern emirates, in the coming days there are possibilities for it.
