Passengers on board an Air Europe flight from Madrid to Montevideo (Uruguay) had a major scare when major turbulence hit the aircraft. 

At least 30 passengers were injured in the incident following which the Boeing 787 aircraft reportedly landed in Brazil. Videos have been doing the rounds on social media showing passengers helping a man get off the overhead luggage cabin after the turbulence ended. In the same video, a baby's cries could be heard in the background.

Another video showed torn ceiling panels, a damaged seat, and dangling oxygen masks resulting from severe turbulence aboard the flight carrying 325 passengers.

A passenger named Norys, who was returning home from a European tour, told media persons that he was relaxing when the captain issued a turbulence warning and instructed everyone to fasten their seatbelts and remain seated.

"There was a very slight turbulence after a long period of calm. It was hardly noticeable. Then, suddenly the plane sharply dropped and we were all lifted up," Norys told Uruguayan outlet El Observador, adding, "Those without seatbelts were thrown, and some ended up stuck to the ceiling."

Air Europa took to social media to inform that their flight bound for Montevideo was redirected to Natal (in Brazil) due to severe turbulence. The plane landed safely, and passengers with injuries are receiving medical care, the airline said.

According to the health department of Rio Grande do Norte state, where Natal is located, 30 passengers were receiving treatment for minor cuts or orthopedic injuries.

Air Europa also mentioned that a replacement aircraft would depart from Madrid later on Monday to take the passengers to Uruguay and resume their travel. (Agencies)
