After declaring the Iran conflict largely contained, US President Donald Trump turned attention back to Ukraine at the G7 summit, urging Russia to pursue peace, signaling possible renewed sanctions on Russian oil exports, and reaffirming support for diplomatic efforts alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

President Donald Trump used the G7 summit in France to signal a major shift in international focus, moving attention away from the recent Iran crisis and back toward efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and fellow G7 leaders, Trump said the next phase of negotiations with Iran would be ‘easier’ following a recent agreement that helped ease tensions in the Gulf.
He added that Iran would soon be ‘back in the rearview mirror,’ allowing world leaders to concentrate on other pressing global issues, particularly the conflict in Ukraine.
Trump described his meeting with Zelenskyy and G7 leaders as ‘very good’ and reiterated his desire to help bring an end to the war.
He urged Russia to pursue a peace agreement with Ukraine, saying too many young soldiers were continuing to lose their lives on both sides of the battlefield.
‘I’m gonna do whatever I can,’ Trump said, emphasising his commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.
The renewed focus on Ukraine comes as the United States considers restoring sanctions on Russian oil shipments that were temporarily eased earlier this year.
The sanctions relief was introduced in March to help stabilize global energy markets after crude oil prices surged. The waiver remained in place during months of instability linked to tensions in the Gulf region.
With oil supplies now moving more freely through the Strait of Hormuz, Trump suggested Washington could soon reverse course and reimpose restrictions on Russian energy exports.
‘Soon we’ll be able to do that because the oil is now flowing,” Trump told reporters. ‘We’re in a position to do that soon.’
Zelenskyy joined G7 leaders for discussions on Ukraine during a brief 75-minute session.
Following the talks, he said Ukraine remains committed to achieving a just peace while accusing Russia of continuing to manipulate international diplomacy.
‘The entire Seven supports Ukraine unanimously today,’ Zelenskyy said, highlighting continued backing from the world’s leading industrialized democracies.
Beyond Ukraine and Iran, Trump also commented on the situation in the Middle East, criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of tensions in Lebanon.
He said Netanyahu ‘has to be more responsible’ and expressed dissatisfaction with Israel’s military actions and its approach toward Hezbollah.
The summit underscored a widening diplomatic agenda for Trump, who is balancing efforts to advance an Iran agreement, address instability in the Middle East, and revive international momentum toward ending Europe’s longest and most destructive conflict since World War II.
