United Nations: US President Donald Trump, addressing the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session on Tuesday, claimed that China and India are the "primary funders" of Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine by continuing to purchase Russian oil. Trump's remarks came amid escalating trade tensions and recent levy actions by the US on Indian goods and energy imports.

Trump said, "China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil," highlighting his administration's position on sanction enforcement and economic pressure on Moscow.

The Trump administration imposed additional tariffs against India, including a 25 per cent levy specifically aimed at penalising New Delhi for its Russian oil imports. These add to previous tariffs, bringing the total US levies on Indian goods to 50 per cent—among the highest levied worldwide.

India has officially called the tariffs "unjustified and unreasonable" and defended its oil purchases as legitimate under the current global energy framework. New Delhi reiterated its right, like any major economy, to safeguard national interests and economic security amid rapidly shifting global energy dynamics.

This sharp US-India trade dispute has strained bilateral ties, but both countries continue dialogue and express intent to resolve issues through negotiations, including talks led by India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal focused on a Bilateral Investment Treaty.

President Trump’s comments at the UN reiterate his administration's tough stance on China and India's trade and economic activities linked to Russia, framing it as funding contributing to the conflict in Eastern Europe.
