Phnom Penh: Thai forces shelled Cambodian positions overnight into Tuesday, killing two additional civilians and raising Cambodia's civilian death toll in the renewed border conflict to six, Phnom Penh's defence ministry reported.

The Thai military opened fire into Banteay Meanchey province after midnight, "resulting in the deaths of two civilians who were travelling on National Road 56 by shelling," the ministry stated on Facebook.

Information Minister Neth Pheaktra told AFP that Thai shelling on Monday killed at least four Cambodian civilians in Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces, with around 10 others wounded.

The Thai army reported one soldier killed and 18 wounded since fighting resumed Sunday, with both sides accusing each other of provocation amid Monday's Thai air strikes and tank deployment.

The clashes stem from a longstanding dispute over borders drawn during French colonial rule, with competing claims to several boundary temples.
