Los Angeles: At least three people were killed in a powerful explosion early Friday morning at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Biscailuz Training Centre.

According to a law enforcement official familiar with the situation who spoke to The Associated Press anonymously due to lack of authorization to discuss the matter publicly, the explosion is being initially investigated as a possible training accident.

According to media reports, the blast happened around 7:30 a.m. at the facility located on Eastern Avenue. The Los Angeles County Fire Department said it responded to calls about a possible explosion around the same time.

Attorney General Pam Bondi posted on X that there "appears to be a horrific incident that killed at least three at a law enforcement training facility" and that investigators were on-site "working to learn more."

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has not confirmed any deaths. The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said he’s been briefed on the matter.

According to sources cited by the Los Angeles Times, members of the bomb squad were reportedly in the process of handling or moving explosive materials when the detonation took place. The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Aerial footage from a local TV station showed the explosion happened in a parking lot filled with sheriff patrol cars and box trucks.
