A man in Islamabad has been arrested after posting a sarcastic comment on social media comparing a local railway crossing to the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns over freedom of expression and law enforcement response.

Islamabad: Police in Islamabad have arrested a man for allegedly sharing a post that compared the Tarnol Railway Crossing in Pakistan to the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route currently affected by tensions in the Middle East.
According to reports, the man posted: “Tarnol Railway Crossing is no less than the Strait of Hormuz. If it is closed, all our problems will be resolved,” apparently referring to frequent traffic congestion at the crossing.
Authorities said the post went viral, prompting police to register a case and take the individual into custody.
The case has been registered under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including disobedience to a public servant’s order, wrongful restraint, and attempt to commit an offence punishable with imprisonment.
Police stated that the arrest was made in view of heightened security conditions in the capital, where restrictions under Section 144 have been imposed.
Officials also reportedly examined the accused’s phone and recovered evidence of the social media post.
The arrest comes amid strict security measures in Islamabad and neighbouring Rawalpindi due to anticipated high-level developments and regional tensions.
Earlier this month, authorities suspended heavy and public transport services in the twin cities without publicly detailing the reasons, urging citizens to cooperate with security agencies.
The arrest has sparked debate, with legal experts questioning the applicability of the charges. Some argue that the statement falls under freedom of expression and does not constitute a security threat.
An editorial in a local publication criticised the move, suggesting that authorities may have overreacted to what appeared to be a sarcastic or humorous comment rather than a genuine threat.
The reference to the Strait of Hormuz reflects its prominence in global discussions due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. In recent weeks, it has also become a subject of satire and dark humour among social media users.
Observers note that the incident highlights the challenges authorities face in balancing security concerns with civil liberties, particularly during periods of heightened alert.
