OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reveals he's waited over 7 years for a booked Tesla, paid $45k, and now seeks a refund after email issues

OpenAI founder and CEO Sam Altman on Friday revealed that he has been waiting for over seven years to receive a Tesla car he booked, but has yet to get it.
Altman said he paid $45,000 as a reservation fee for the electric vehicle and has now decided to ask the Elon Musk-led company for a refund.
What did Altman share online?
In a post on social media platform X, Altman shared three screenshots of his email exchanges with Tesla. The first screenshot confirmed his booking, while the second showed his message requesting Tesla to cancel the order and process a refund.
However, the third screenshot revealed that his refund request email bounced back, showing an “address not found” error message.
Sharing the screenshots, Altman captioned the post, “A tale in three acts.”
In a follow-up comment, he wrote, “I really was excited for the car! And I understand delays. But 7.5 years has felt like a long time to wait.”
How did people react?
The post quickly went viral, drawing thousands of reactions and comments online. Among them was a playful response from Altman’s brother, Jack Altman.
In a teasing reply, Jack shared a photo of Sam with a quote that read, “Whether we burn $500 million, $5 billion, or $50 billion a year — I don’t care,” and joked, “You can’t be worrying about 50k like this.”
Sam responded to his brother’s comment with humour, writing, “little brother energy is the WORST.”
What about Tesla’s response?
Tesla has not yet commented on Altman’s post. Meanwhile, the company recently began delivering the standard Model Y to customers in India.
The electric vehicle maker said that delivery of the Long Range variant will begin soon in the country.
Tesla also announced that new Model Y owners will receive a complimentary Wall Connector, allowing them to conveniently install it in their parking space for easy home charging.
