New Delhi / Cairo / Amman: A group of Islamic nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have issued a strong joint condemnation of Israel’s recognition of the “Somaliland” region of Somalia, calling the move a grave violation of international law and a direct threat to regional and global stability.

In a joint statement released following Israel’s announcement on December 26, 2025, the foreign ministers of 22 countries—including Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Pakistan, Qatar, Nigeria, Iraq, and Somalia—unequivocally rejected Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, warning that it could severely destabilise the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.

The ministers said Israel’s decision reflects a “full and blatant disregard for international law” and could have serious repercussions for international peace and security.

They condemned the move in the “strongest terms,” stressing that it violates the United Nations Charter, which mandates respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Reaffirming their full support for the Federal Republic of Somalia, the signatories rejected any measures that undermine Somalia’s unity or sovereignty over its entire territory. They warned that recognising parts of sovereign states sets a dangerous precedent that threatens the foundations of the international system.

The joint statement also accused Israel of pursuing expansionist policies and cautioned that such unilateral recognitions could fuel instability far beyond the Horn of Africa.

Importantly, the ministers categorically rejected any attempt to link Israel’s Somaliland recognition with broader geopolitical agendas, including alleged efforts to forcibly expel Palestinians from their land. Any such attempts, the statement said, are “unequivocally rejected in any form as a matter of principle.”

The statement was jointly issued by the foreign ministers of Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, Comoros, Djibouti, Gambia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Türkiye, Yemen, along with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
